November/December 2000

From The President's Desk

It is November 8, 2000. The western sections of Manitoba and some areas to the north of Winnipeg have already had more than their share of snow while here in Winnipeg, we are receiving periods of rain, freezing rain, snow: the result, a real mess! A year ago on this date we set a record, plus 17 (must have been wearing shorts.) Oh well, winter is most certainly upon us.

The eleventh hour, the eleventh day, the eleventh month, a time when we honour those who made the supreme sacrifice in order that we are able to live in the greatest country in the world. That sacrifice has allowed us to enjoy the peace we have in Canada. A year ago The Winnipeg Ostomy Association applied to the Manitoba Community Services Council for permission to conduct some bingos. Approval has now been received and we will be holding four, sometime early in the New Year, the dates are yet to be confirmed, and the location will probably be at Club Regent.

The funds raised will not be used for general operation but for some special projects such as, the booklet "Resuming Your Lifestyle" distributed by the E.T.'S to new ostomates at the time of surgery, upgrading and extending our website, upgrading and enhancing our library, extending our resource library into the community, setting up our new office and some other ideas still in the planning stages. Sounds ambitious, and we are going to do it. We will need at least ten people to work at each of the four bingos. The time commitment will be approximately two and a half to three hours. Friends and family members are most welcome, the only requirement is that those participating must be 18 years old or over. A number of people have already indicated an interest in taking part, but we do need more. So, please contact me, either at the chapter meeting, the Christmas party, or phone me at 775-2175 (leave a message) or you can also leave a message our voicemail at 237-2022. Please do take part. Let's have some fun!

Although the move to our new office has been slower than expected and frustrating at times, it does look now that it will greatly enhance our ability to serve ostomates all across the province. That's it for now. See you at the chapter meeting on Nov. 22nd and at the Christmas party on December 10th.
